Both modern and jazz dance techniques are based on the basics of the old ballet tradition, even though both forms were considered to be rebellions against it. In modern and jazz dancing the movements are big and exaggerated and there is usually an attitude the dancer conveys to the audience. The attitude would depend on the dance.
ElliTe Studios follows the Imperial Society of Dancing (ISTD) syllabus for modern dance classes. For jazz, we teach as many different popular styles as possible; ranging from Fosse, to Fred and Ginger, lyrical and blues, salsa, pop, hip hop, commercial and street (to mention just a few).

Age 3 - 5 Modern Dance Curriculum
These classes involve some basic technical steps with emphasis on rhythm and relaxation. At this age the children also have plenty of opportunity to dance to pop songs which makes the classes very popular and fun to do. We also introduce the set exercises of the ISTD Primary modern syllabus.
Age 6 - 8 Modern Dance Curriculum
The children now progress onto studying the work in grades 1 and 2 of the ISTD syllabus, which involves development of rhythm, timing, spatial awareness, strength, movement vocabulary, co-ordination, balance, and performance skills. Students learn how to interpret music and display sensitivity to musical content and style, whilst also learning to work in groups and respond to audiences.
Age 8+ Modern Dance Curriculum
More technical work is now covered incorporating movements such as contractions, isolations, and loose leg swings. All the grades include free work and exercises where the students are encouraged to move creatively, improvise and choreograph their own pieces. Students still have the opportunity to dance to pop music which is very much enjoyed, but are also introduced to other musical styles and influences.
Once a student reaches a high level of competency in modern dance, they move onto vocational exams which require a high level of commitment and with an increasing emphasis on safe dance practice. Students at this level should show virtuosity in performance, a high standard of technique and a sound knowledge and understanding of the dance style. The syllabus used is intended to prepare students for professional auditions.
Most children are prepared for taking the ISTD grade exams. However, this is not compulsory and other arrangements can be made.
